Organizing Your Garage

While you are organizing, don’t forget to take a look at your garage. Set aside two successive days for organizing your garage. One day for tearing it apart and putting it back together and the next day for organizing wall space. You will need to take everything out, boxes, bikes, lawnmowers, snowblowers, etc. Take this time to sweep out bugs, dirt, and more!
Decluttering is just as essential in this space as any other in your home. Once you have made decisions about what you are keeping, it is time to define storage categories. Don’t disregard the storage room above the overhead doors that can be used for long flat things.
Once you have created your categories, put things that you use the most in simple access, and things that are ‘sometimes’ things can go up higher. Utilize wall and ceiling space to maximize your vicinity. Put up shelves to place boxes on and label them so you can ‘look and find.’ Garage items can be very weighty and need extra support, and you might want to add extra supports or make them out of wood.
Metal shelving units are fashionable but don’t forget to use the wall space at the top of the wall. Shelving can go up here, be out of the way, and is great for those things you only use once or twice a year. Well-built plastic containers with lids are an outstanding way to keep bugs and dirt away.
Tag everything you have in containers for easy searching. Being able to actually use your garage and find everything without wasting time hunting for it are rewards for your hard labor. Do you have any idea how much money you are going to save without having to go and purchase new items for the things you lost?

Tips for your garage door

The new generation of garage doors is reasonably priced, safe, and easy to install, and they are no longer a convenience for only a select few.
You should consider changing your garage door if it is too old or if it has an old motor or pulley system.

The garage doors can be selected by the type of chain System they use: screw-drive system, chain drive system, or computer-controlled system. The screw drive system has a mechanism that moves the length of a steel rod; it is a lifting mechanism mounted in your garage ceiling.
The chain drive system is made of a chain that moves the door along a pair of tracks; this is the most common and affordable system and has the disadvantage of being extremely noisy. The computer drive mechanism doesn’t use any screws or chains; the system’s body is mounted above the door.

The speed and the type of power are other factors used in selecting a new garage door. A faster door means a more expensive one, but this feature reduces the waiting time on your driveway. Even though it opens quickly, a door usually closes pretty slow for safety. The motor’s power is important in choosing a door because it has to have enough power to raise the door; a large motor is likely to last longer. Also, the quietness of the motor should be another deciding factor.

Enhanced security features can be found in a newer generation door that uses random codes. A new random code is generated each time the remote control is used to open the garage door. This security code prevents you from opening another garage and vice versa. The remote
control may be found in several models with a different number of buttons. A multiple buttons remote control is the best choice for someone who has several garages. The fixed controller is mounted on the wall either inside or outside, near the garage door, and it allows the garage
door to open without a remote controller. The keypad allows us to close the door for a specific period of time, and it provides enough time to exit the garage without running.

Safety features are present on every garage door. These features prevent the door from crushing objects or people by reversing the direction if it hits something. This safety, an electronic beam, triggers a feature and is mandated by law. A computer-controlled mechanism can
For example, the detector compensates for varying conditions if the door is coming in contact with an obstruction or is closing too fast.

Are you looking for a new garage door? Below details of the different types of garage doors available for you. The more common garage doors are the manual up and over and the electric roller garage doors.

Below details about four types of garage doors available.

Canopy Garage Door

This garage door is ubiquitous in homes, and most of them are manually operated due to budget restrictions. This garage door is elementary to operate as you lift and push the garage door up to leave it to hang over the driveway. Sometimes the door can fall to head height causing a dangerous obstruction.
This door is quite easy to install with only a frame secured to the garage opening and for customers who don’t use their garage regularly.

Retractable Garage Door

Although this is similar to the canopy garage door, there are a few differences. Such as the door extends further from the frame, and the door then retracts and is stored in the ceiling on runners in the garage, which means there is no overhang left as the door is flushed with the garage’s opening when open.
Again straight forward to install but for customers who don’t want the obstruction over their driveway.

Roller Garage Door

This garage door looks like a security shutter or window blind and works in the same manner. With both automatic and manual, the door rolls up and down, but this door can improve the width on the opening of the garage as the runners are installed behind the brick on the garage entrance.
Becoming a popular option of garage door with customers reduces drafts and convenience. Customers are willing to pay for the benefits of convenience.

Sectional Garage Door

If the garage door is to be used a lot, this could be a good choice with added insulation. This type of door is the roller and retractable garage door in one. The door splits into large sections, and they move up and are stored in the roof ceiling on runners.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, there were over 24 million crimes reported in the U.S. during 2003. Of those, almost 5.6 million were personal crimes, while 18.6 million were property crimes. Twenty-two out of every 1,000 American households were affected by crimes of violence and 163 out of every 1,000 households were affected by property crimes. With these kinds of statistics, it’s understandable that Americans are concerned with personal safety and the safety of their homes and businesses.
The Michigan State Police offer these tips for personal safety:
1. Stay alert. Keep your mind on your surroundings, as well as who is in front of you and who is behind you.
2.
Walk purposefully, stand tall, and make eye contact with people around you.
3. Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave.
4. While driving, keep your car in good repair with the gas tank at least half full.
5. Park in well-lit areas and always lock your doors.
6. Put valuables out of sight or in the trunk.
7. Drive with the doors locked and the windows up.
8. Check the floorboards and front and rear seats before getting in your car.
9. In an elevator, stand near the controls. If someone suspicious enters, get off the elevator.
10. At home, don’t give personal information over the telephone to people you don’t know.
11. Install a peephole in your front door, and don’t open the door to anyone you don’t know. Verify the identity of service people before allowing them in.
The Michigan State Police offer these tips for protecting your property:
1. Do not hide house keys in mailboxes, planters, or under doormats.
2. Do not include personal identification on key rings.
3. Have a separate ignition key to leave with mechanics or parking attendants.
4. If you lose your house keys or move into a new house, have the locks re-keyed.
5. When going away, make sure your home looks occupied. Put interior lights on timers, arrange to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped, and close and lock your garage door.
6. Install and use good deadbolt locks on your doors; lock sliding glass doors or use a dowel in the door track.
7. Trim shrubbery hiding doors or windows and cut tree branches that could help a thief climb to second-story windows.
8. Make sure all porches, entrances, and yards are well lit.
When it comes to personal safety, many Americans are going a step further to ensure their own personal safety and the safety of their homes and offices. Car alarms, business alarms, and home alarms are important components of personal safety. Many people carry whistles on their key rings or in their pockets; when personal safety is at risk, blowing whistles can attract the attention of passersby, who can then call for help. Some people carry mace or pepper spray in their pockets, briefcases, or purses, while others carry concealed stun guns to the extent that the law allows. Those who leave their children in the care of others often use baby cams or other video recorders to ensure that the caregivers are acting appropriately.

A Garage door opener is a piece of equipment used for opening and closing garage doors. Most models are remotely controlled. Garage door openers are simple but extremely useful devices. So much so, that it’s hard to imagine living without them now.

The first garage door opener consisted of a radio transmitter, a receiver, and an actuator to open or close the door. In this, the receiver would detect a change in the amplitude and would open or close the door. However, there was a security concern with these kinds of garage door openers. They could be opened by anybody with a transmitter. Also, there were accidental openings of garage doors by neighbors trying to open their doors. The later door openers used a shared frequency to overcome the accidental opening by other users. Using dipswitches a total of 256 combinations were made to prevent interference from other garage door openers. However, the security issue was still not overcome.

The present-day garage door openers use rolling frequency or hopping code technology. In these, the frequency of opening looks ahead type, which means every time the door is opened then the next time the door will be opened by another frequency.

The technology for garage door openers is fairly simple. Three kinds are used, chain drive, screw drive, and belt drive. Chain drives are noisy as they use a metallic chain along with a metal trolley. However, they are fairly cheap about $130 Screw drives consist of a threaded lead screw. They start at about $150 The newer models consist of plastic-lined tracks to reduce the noise and increase the speed of opening. Belt drives are the costliest and the quietest. They begin at about $170

There is a misconception that the lifting is done by the door opener. However, the actual lifting is done by the springs. When the door is closed the springs come into tension. When the door is being opened the spring does most of the lifting. There are two types of linear expansion springs and torsional springs. Garage door openers are of two types, jackshaft type, and trolley type. The jackshaft type occupies less space. The trolley type consists of a trolley attached to the door and also to the motor. This occupies space in the ceiling but is more popular because it is safer. In the jackshaft type, it is difficult to sense when someone is being crushed under the door. There are two types of motors available, AC and DC. AC is more common but DC has many advantages. It consumes less electricity, the speed is easily controlled, and makes less noise.

There are some models that auto-reverse in case of obstruction like a pet or a child. The remotes usually operate up to a distance of 150 feet. The remote can be used to switch on the light of the garage also. Most garage door openers come with a keypad, which can be installed outside the garage. This is used to open the garage if the remote batteries are down or the user has forgotten the remote. Most garage door openers allow emergency release so that the door can be opened manually in case of power failures.

Am I right or what? Hey, if you have a vehicle, which I’m sure you do, you should have a decent place to store it, and keep it sheltered from the harsh elements

It’s probably fairly safe to say that most middle-class homes have garages with lift master garage door openers or some brand of opener. Not since I was a kid have I spotted the manual versions. Not that these weren’t fine at one time. They certainly didn’t bother me when we had them back in high school when I received my driver’s license. It was not big deal. I would simply pull up to the garage door, hop out of my car, jerk up the garage door, and then re-enter my vehicle to drive in. The down-side was that there were no lights ever on because it’s not like you’re going to leave them on all the time. And of course my favorite, the door would sometimes fall back down. Wow, was that ever annoying! Other than that, the manual garage doors were perfect. So, what about power doors and lift master garage door openers? Who am I kidding? It would be terrible to resort back to the manual model. These days I simply roll up to my driveway, press a button on the visor in my car, and pull into the well-lit garage. It has a safety light that kicks on when the door opens. Then once I’m in, I press the button again and I’m safe inside.

SAFETY! That’s why lift master garage door openers are so awesome and necessary. The new method of entering your already-lit garage without leaving your vehicle is so much safer than the old method. Imagine if someone were lurking inside your garage. The light would allow you to see him. And if you need to bolt, you’re already safe in your vehicle. You could say that lift master garage door openers have become a necessity.

When designing your new house you will need to decide what type of garage door will be suitable.
The garage door will have to follow the style of the whole house and this can also determine the materials that your door will be constructed with.

There are various types of garage doors that can be constructed from wood, aluminum, steel, glass, and other materials.

The materials can also determine what type of door you will be buying.

There are overhead doors, bi-folding doors, and doors that roll back against empty wall space.
Obviously, the roll back doors will take up quite a lot of room in the garage where you won’t be able to use the wall space.

If space is limited then an overhead door might be a better alternative.

If you are living in a particularly wet climate, then the overhead door can create problems as the water runs off the door when it rests up against the ceiling of your garage.

A roller door doesn’t create quite so much of a problem as the water is limited to the area of the roll at the entrance of the garage.

Overhead doors generally need to be constructed with lighter-weight materials although there are many overhead wooden doors due to the advanced track and roller construction that has been designed in modern doors.

Garage doors can cost a lot of money but they can also make or break the whole visual effect of your finished house so cost alone shouldn’t be the deciding factor when buying your door.

There are several excellent websites on the internet that offer information and price comparisons for garage doors but you will probably need a door professional to give you specialist advice at your property to ensure you make the right decision.

Buying the right garage door can add thousands of dollars to the value of your house.
